Today’s helpful housewife hint of the day:

Temperature Control for Consistency

  • Thickening: If your glaze is too thin, add a small amount of powdered sugar gradually until you achieve the desired consistency. Alternatively, let it sit at room temperature for a bit to thicken naturally.

  • Thinning: For a glaze or icing that's too thick, try adding a bit of liquid, like water or milk, a few drops at a time, and mix thoroughly until you reach the desired consistency.

  • Room Temperature Ingredients: Ensure that ingredients like butter or cream cheese are at room temperature before making icing. This helps achieve a smoother consistency without lumps and makes it easier to blend.

  • Heat Control: When heating glazes, avoid high temperatures. Gentle heat and stirring can prevent the mixture from becoming too runny or too thick too quickly.

  • Refrigeration Assistance: If your glaze or icing is too runny and you're short on time, a brief stint in the refrigerator can help it set faster. Conversely, if it's too thick, letting it sit at room temperature briefly can help loosen it up slightly.
