Create Vintage Style at an Affordable Price

Create Vintage Style at an affordable price with a DIY!

Stereo consoles from the 1960s are common thrift finds.

Stereos we’re very popular in the 50s and 60s. Many of these consoles are in working condition, but may need a few repairs or a good cleaning to get them sounding their best.

Sadly a lot of stereo consoles have been gutted or are beyond repair, but they can easily be turned into a DIY project.

I turned my stereo console that was purchased at a thrift store for $15.00 into a retro style bar with a little scrubbing, sanding and used left over paint from another project.

You can get creative and customize the console with a new color and peel and stick wallpaper at an affordable price.

Add shelves, wine racks and other features to the turn the console into a functional and stylish bar. It also makes a great conversation piece when entertaining guests.

Turn a none working console into a vintage bar!

Also a second idea for a mini bar

I taped off the gold trim in the front of this console with painters tape

The inside had previously been painted with a brown deck paint it was hard to cover

I did 3 coats of paint one white primer, then 2 coats of gray.. Behr color: mission control

sanded between each coat

General Instructions:

  1. Gather your materials: sandpaper, paint, paint brushes, roller and tray, painter’s tape, peel and stick paper, rags, Pine Sol

  2. Clean console with warm water and lemon pine sol. Mix one part warm water with one part lemon pine sol in a bucket. Dip a cloth into the mixture and use it to scrub the exterior of the console. Pay close attention to any dirt or grime that has built up. Once the console is clean, wipe off with warm water. Finally, dry the console with a soft, lint-free cloth.

  3. Sanding with 220 grit sandpaper should be done gently and in a circular motion.

  4. To wipe off the dust from sanding, use a damp cloth or a vacuum cleaner with a dust attachment. Make sure to wipe down the area thoroughly, paying special attention to hard-to-reach areas. If you have sanded with a power sander, you should also use a brush to brush away the dust.

  5. Once you have chosen a color, you will need to select the appropriate type of paint for your project. Depending on the surface that you are going to be painting, you may need to select a specific type of paint, make sure to read the instructions on the paint can to ensure that you are using the correct type of paint for the project.

  6. Once the surface is prepped, you can then begin to paint. Start by applying the paint in a thin and even layer, working in one direction and using even strokes. Once the layer is dry, you can continue to add additional layers until you reach the desired look.

  7. You can give your console a new look by adding retro peel and stick wallpaper to the interior. Before you begin, make sure to thoroughly clean the surface of the console. For best results, paint the surface the same color as the background of the paper. As this is not regular wallpaper, you may find it difficult to butt the edges up against each other and you don’t want the old color coming through.

Each piece of vintage furniture can be very different, but I hope this blog gives you some tips and inspiration for fixing up your vintage thrift finds on a budget.

One of my favorite YouTube channels to watch is Transcend Furniture Gallery at https://www.youtube.com/@TranscendFurnitureGallery. They offer plenty of tutorials and advice on how to restore vintage furniture.
